Revisiting Team Nursing: Including LPNs in a Shared Care Delivery Model

Written by: Lisa Reents, Ed.D MSN, CSHE, CNE, CCRNk / November 19, 2023

Team nursing has had a long history and gained popularity during and after WWII. The “Primary Nursing” model would take over in the early 1980s while implementing the new DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) reimbursement model.

While primary nursing has been the dominant patient care delivery model for decades, the military team nursing model historically has provided greater patient and nurse satisfaction. This is partly because team member roles are clearly understood and well-orchestrated for the overall goal of quality patient care.

The shift towards primary nursing revolved aro

Vaccine Fatigue? Time To Add RSV

Written by: Patty Blevins, BSN, RN / November 14, 2023

The new adult respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine may exacerbate vaccine fatigue. Many older adults can feel overwhelmed by the discussion of additional immunizations. Another has been added to the already long list of recommended shots, including the flu, shingles, pneumonia, tetanus/diphtheria vaccines, and multiple COVID boosters.

Until now, RSV was associated with serious risk to infants. For most people, a simple cold resulted. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends the RSV vaccine for adults over 60. Why the addition?

What is RSV?

RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms; most people recover in 1-2 weeks. Even though nearly all children get RSV before they are two years old, it can cause severe illness in infants and is the le

Study: Nursing Students Can Increase Clinical Judgment Through Simulation

Written by: Lisa Reents, Ed.D MSN, CSHE, CNE, CCRNk / November 2, 2023

As a prelicensure nursing professor, I noticed students developed a sharper sense of decision-making skills after repetitive simulation exposure.

Healthcare Simulation

Simulations in healthcare can involve using a simulator, which is a computerized manikin that can initiate or respond to vocal or human-like responses within its environment. The manikin is controlled by a simulation technician or nursing faculty- typically behind the scenes- without students knowing what the simulator will do next.

Another option for patient simulation is using live actors to perform according to a scripted scenario. They respond to students in ways that cue them to react, make decisions, and challenge critical thinking.

How Can We Help Nursing Students Increase Their Clinical Judgment Through Simulation?

It is controlled by a simulation technician or another nursing faculty, typically behind the scenes, without students’ awareness of what the simulator will do next. How to Research and Use Keywords for SEO

Written by: Shelby Jones, MSN, RN / October 24, 2023
What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a word or phrase customers use to find specific online information. If you know what keywords your target audience uses to search, you can harness this knowledge to direct traffic to your website.

Researching and using ideal keywords is also called search engine optimization (SEO).

According to MailChimp, Google uses over 200 elements to generate a search result. All internet results with that keyword or phrase are listed on the search engine results page (SERP).

Keywords can help push your business’ website, blog, or products toward the top of the SERP. Keyword research analytics he

How to Keep Active Voice While Writing in the Past Tense

Andrea Wickstrom, BSN, RN, PHN / July 17, 2023

I recently wrote two personal essays for Next Avenue, and each contained multiple past-tense stories. Grammarly was nagging me non-stop about writing in active voice instead of passive voice.

So, I had to figure out how to keep an active voice while writing in the past tense.

I had to do some research…

Here’s what I found.

4 helpful reminders to keep an active voice when writing in the past tense:

➡ When writing history, determine who was responsible for the idea, action, or event.

➡ We can’t understand the past without knowing who was there.

➡ The subject is the doer, not the receiver.

➡ Passive (the receiver of the action) verbs confuse the reader.
